How to pull yourself out of a work slump.

If you’re in a job that you no longer enjoy or are looking for a change of direction completely, there’s no time like the present to start laying the foundations for your next exciting move. But how do you go about it?

Shaking yourself out of a work slump can be daunting. However, if you find yourself constantly grumbling to your friends, partner, or even colleagues (not advisable!), or your job’s starting to affect all aspects of your life, it’s time to move on. And it really doesn’t need to be a huge undertaking. Baby steps into the direction you want to go are often all that’s needed to get you to that ‘aha’ moment or at least move you into a better-suited job.

Five top tips from www.FindMyPubJobs.com:

1. Choose job satisfaction every time.

If you’re looking for a job that allows greater freedom, flexibility and hours that work around your lifestyle, the hospitality sector may be a great starting point in your next career move. Start off by researching where you would like to work, find out who the best contact is and approach them directly; or if you want much of the hassle removed, want regular job alerts and want recruiters to be able to find you, a job website is a perfect choice.

2. Give yourself small goals and review them.

Perhaps it’s tidying up your CV, sending off an email or even dropping a note to a contact on LinkedIn, whatever that goal may be, ensure you set one each month, week or even day and you’ll soon recognise that those baby steps will make a big difference when it’s time to review them.

3. Look to your lifestyle to lift you from that slump.

If you’re stuck in the grind and don’t ever change or mix up, your routine, life and career will no doubt become tiresome and boring. Your lifestyle has a lot to do with how you feel generally so open yourself up to trying different things and new experiences. Short term, it will lift your spirits and may even kick start new energy levels to start a brand new job search.

4. Shock yourself into a new direction.

If you’ve been considering a move into the hospitality, pub or even the restaurant sector but not sure you want to go for it why not take some voluntary work experience?! We know, we know…work experience? Isn’t that for 16 year olds? Research actually shows that those who volunteer their time or take some time out to do something new for an evening, a day or even a week can provide a different perspective on people’s life and their career. Taking a small amount of time out to shadow someone or help out behind the scenes can help gain greater clarity on a next move.

5. Be grateful.

A career slump can actually be beneficial for many reasons because it’s alerting you to the fact that something isn’t right. Although at the time the slump isn’t the most enjoyable place to be, recognise that it’s given you new direction and look forward to the future!
